A 58-year-old woman with a palpable 3 cm left upper outer quadrant breast mass underwent a cutting needle biopsy (arrow) which showed infiltrating ductal carcinoma. There were palpable enlarged left axillary lymph nodes. She was a clinical stage III (see breast cancer staging).
The patient was taken to the operating room for quadrantectomy and axillary dissection. The left shoulder was elevated with a folded sheet and the arm supported with double cushions on the armboard.
