The posterolateral thoracotomy is the most common incision used for pulmonary resection. The latissimus is divided anteriorly from the triangle of auscultation. The lower part of the trapezius is divided between the medial border of the scapula and the spine, the length depending on the exposure needed.

The fascia over the triangle of auscultation was opened and a finger used to bluntly dissect the plane beneath the latissimus.
