The TA originates posterior to the superior vena cava in the mediastinum and divides early before reaching the lateral border of the cava, so the cava must be retracted medially to find the main trunk. Most (63%) individuals have a single TA, and an additional 23% have an additional anterior ascending branch. In 9% of individuals, the TA supplies the entire upper lobe. Rarely, the anterior and apical branches have separate origins.
