The major fissure was complete, and did not require posterior application of the stapler to free the pedicle of the upper lobe. Posterior dissection on the continuation of the pulmonary artery exposed the posterior segment artery of the upper lobe.

The posterior segment artery is single in three quarters of individuals, double in 16%, and absent in 9%.

The posterior segment artery was ligated and divided. The posterior segment artery can be divided anteriorly after division of the pulmonary vein, posteriorly after division of the bronchus, or centrally at the confluence of the fissures as in this case.
