The combination aortic root sump and antegrade cardioplegia cannula was placed between the aortic valve and the aortic cannula. In addition to feeding antegrade cardioplegia solution into the aortic root and coronaries at the beginning of the procedure, it de-airs the aorta at completion. In contrast, retrograde cardioplegia is given in the cardiac veins and comes out of the coronary ostia by the aortic valve, hence its name.
