A figure-of-eight stitch was placed in the superior and inferior borders of the neck of the pancreas just distal to the transection point, and the pancreas was divided with a 55-mm transverse stapler. The exposed superior mesenteric/portal vein is shown.

The small branches draining the head of the pancreas into the right side of the portal vein were carefully ligated and divided, freeing the specimen.
