The needle is passed from below upward, perpendicular to the surface and parallel to the cut edge, again one needle diameter from the edge. The needle is again released before the forceps grasps the tip and gently teases the needle through. The high power necessary for precise needle placement limits the width of the field. Therefore, it is necessary to zoom down to lower (10X) power to see the ends of the suture for knot-tying.

Suture handling
The 10-O suture material comes in 6cm lengths and is both delicate and expensive (about $12.00 per strand currently). A strand should be good for 10-12 knots. Premature breakage wastes valuable material and time. The suture is grasped delicately with the flats of the platform instrument (needle holder or platform forceps), using the minimal pressure necessary.
