Needle-holders with curved jaws provide positional advantage in placing sutures. The jaw surfaces are flat and apposing. Locking needle-holders are a disadvantage because of the lurch incurred in locking and unlocking and are not recommended.

Finer-tipped scissors are used for dissection, less fine for suture cutting only.

Micro-forceps may have curved or straight tips. Platform forceps like the ones shown here are designed to manipulate suture without kinking or breaking it. Jewelers forceps are for tissue use only.
