A leak test is performed by filling a syringe with saline, connecting it to the feeding tube and raising the fluid level 30cm above the cecum (the bowel is occluded proximally and distally). The feeding tube is removed; if leakage of NS is found, additional length is added to the cecal wrap.
The opening in the umbilicus is then created by everting the umbilicus and making a V-shaped incision, with the apex of the V at the deepest part of the umbilicus.
