The Seldinger wire (see Seldinger technique) was advanced and identified by the trans-esophageal echo probe as the cannula was advanced up the vena cava. The patient was placed on partial bypass to perfuse the abdominal organs, particularly gut and kidneys, during thoracic aortic clamping. Toxic metabolites released from reperfused ischemic gut can have devastating systemic effects.
