The right side of the infundibulum was inspected to rule out the presence of an accessory or replaced right hepatic artery. Such an artery, arising from the superior mesenteric artery in about 15% of individuals, lies to the right in the hepatoduodenal ligament (see biliary anatomy and biliary variation), and poses a danger when dissection is begun in the usually safe area to the right of the infundibulum.
