The neck of viable mesentery just proximal to the point of constriction was compressed between the surgeon’s thumb and fingers as the mesentery was spread to prevent humoral toxins from draining from the dead bowel into the systemic circulation and causing circulatory collapse. This pressure was maintained until the dead bowel was resected.
