The cricothyroid muscles run from the anterolateral surfaces of the cricoid to the inner side of the lower edge of the thyroid cartilage.

The vector of pull of the cricothyroid muscle rotates the cricoid cartilage on the pivot of the cricothyroid joint (inferior cornu of thyroid cartilage).

The rotation of the cricoid stretches and tenses the vocal cords and affects the timbre and strength of the voice. Compromise of cricothyroid function results in hoarseness, huskiness and weakness (reduced volume) of the voice.
