The posterior cricoarytenoids run from the posterior body of the cricoid to the muscular processes of the arytenoids.

Contraction of the posterior cricoarytenoids opens the vocal cords for free passage of air during inspiration.

Contraction of the lateral cricoarytenoids swings the muscular process of the arytenoids anterior and approximates the cords. This function is necessary for phonation, for protecting the airway from aspiration and for straining (Valsalva).
