The divisions of the facial nerve are shown. The motor branches of the facial nerve pass through the substance of the parotid gland (see parotidectomy) and animate the muscles of facial expression. The temporal branch is most cephalad and innervates the frontalis and muscles around the eye, most significantly effecting elevation of the eyebrow. The marginal mandibular branch effects elevation of the corner of the mouth and injury results in drooping.
