Lion Reef Software, Inc. (referred to as "we" herein) is the sole owner of the information collected on the Vesalius website (referred to as "Vesalius" herein). Lion Reef's policies regarding this information are described below.
Information Collection and Use
While basic access to Vesalius is available to all viewers, full access to Vesalius is reserved for subscribers. At the time you subscribe, we request information from you regarding your identity and your status as a physician, other healthcare professional, student, or non-healthcare professional or consumer. For physicians and healthcare professionals, we request and collect information regarding your area of clinical or professional specialty. We also request information regarding your age, gender, and country of residence.
This information is compiled to form an aggregate picture of Vesalius subscribers, which we share with our advertising and sponsorship partners from the healthcare industry. Though we collect and track this information for our own use in managing your subscription and our communication with you, we do not provide your name or e-mail address to any third party.
We do not create individual profiles of our users, or store information regarding your personal use of Vesalius.
Vesalius does not set persistent cookies. At the end of each Vesalius session, any cookies set by Vesalius are deleted from your computer.
Vesalius hosts advertising banners and sponsorship links. All of these banners and links are clearly segregated from Vesalius editorial content. No links or references to advertisers or sponsors are integrated into any text narrative, image, illustration, or animation on the Vesalius site. Advertising links and banners are identified by the word "ADVERTISEMENT", in conformance with the guidelines developed by the Health on the Net initiative and outlined in the HON Code of Conduct.
Vesalius uses the Google AdSense program to display text-based third-party advertisements on certain pages in the Vesalius Clinical Folios. These text-based ads are displayed in the right-hand margin or at the bottom of the page, asegregated from Vesalius editorial content and identified by the word "ADVERTISEMENT". To improve the effectiveness of its AdSense program, Google may utilize cookies to track your usage of Vesalius. Cookies set by Google may be stored on your computer. Your Web browser allows you to manage the degree to which you allow third-party cookies to be placed on your computer.
Clear Gifs (Web Bugs)
Clear gifs or "Web bugs" are tiny graphics with a unique identifier, similar in function to cookies, and are used to track the online movements of Web users. Advertising service companies often use clear gifs in conjunction with cookies to correlate ad-serving opportunities with previous knowledge of a viewer's online behavior. Google's AdSense program may utilize clear gifs to track your usage of Vesalius and improve the effectiveness of its advertising.
The Vesalius server does not use its own clear gifs or Web bugs.
Like most standard Web site servers, we use log files to analyze the usage and performance of Vesalius. The log files capture information that summarizes the sessions of Vesalius viewers, such as the internet protocol (IP) address of the viewer, the viewer's browser and operating system type, the referring/exit pages for the session, the pages the viewer requested from the server, and the date and time pages were accessed. This information is then used to develop an aggregate summary of site usage and demographics, and to present advertisers and sponsors with data on the number of times their banners were viewed and clicked. IP addresses and other data from log files are not correlated or otherwise associated with any personally identifiable information.
Communications from Vesalius
New subscribers to Vesalius are sent a welcome message containing their user ID and interim password.
We do not currently send promotional messages or any other messages to Vesalius subscribers via e-mail. If and when we decide to do this in the future, out of respect for the privacy of our subscribers we will present the option to not receive these types of communications. Please see the Choice/Opt-out section below.
We share aggregated demographic information with our advertisers, sponsors and other partners. For instance, we might provide our partners with information on the number of vascular surgeons among our subscribers, or the percentage of our subscribers who attend medical schools in the United States. This aggregated information is not linked to any personally-identifiable information.
We do not currently send promotional e-mail messages to Vesalius subscribers, but if we do so in the future, subscribers who no longer wish to receive communications from Vesalius may opt-out by replying to a promotional message and placing the word "unsubscribe" in the subject line. Alternatively, subscribers can send an e-mail request to opt out of all promotional messages to:
This Web site contains links to the sites of our advertisers and sponsors. Please be aware that we (Lion Reef Software, Inc.) are not responsible for the privacy practices of such other sites. We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our site and to read the privacy statements of each and every Web site that collects personally identifiable information. This privacy statement applies solely to information collected by this Web site.
We take every precaution to protect our usersí information. When susbscribers submit sensitive information via Vesalius, their information is protected both online and off-line.
Prior to being asked to enter sensitive information (such as a credit card number), our subscribers are redirected to a secure Web page hosted by our transaction services partner, Bank of America. Information entered in the forms on this secure page is encrypted and is protected with the best encryption software in the industry SSL. While on a secure page, such as our transaction page hosted by Bank of America, the lock icon on the bottom of Web browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer becomes locked, as opposed to un-locked, or open, when users are just viewing unencrypted pages.
Once your transaction has been processed on our secure transaction page, we do not retain any of your credit card information. We only retain the authorization code we receive from Bank of America to approve your transaction.
While we use SSL encryption to protect sensitive information online, we also do everything in our power to protect user-information off-line. All of our usersí information, not just the sensitive information mentioned above, is restricted in our offices. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, our billing clerk or a customer service representative) are granted access to personally identifiable information. Furthermore, ALL employees are kept up-to-date on our security and privacy practices. Every quarter, as well as any time new policies are added, our employees are notified and/or reminded about the importance we place on privacy, and what they can do to ensure our usersí information is protected. Finally, the servers that store personally-identifiable information are in a secure environment, at a state-of-the art hosting facility.
Updating/Deleting Personal Information
If a subscriber's personally-identifiable information changes (such as name, e-mail address, occupational or professional status), we allow the subscriber to submit his or her new information to our database by visiting the Vesalius page updating your account information after logging in.
Subscribers who wish to terminate their subscriptions and remove all personally-identifiable information from our database can do so by sending us a termination request in writing via postal mail to the address specified at the bottom of this page.
Notification of Changes
If, however, we are going to use usersí personally identifiable information in a manner different from that stated at the time of collection we will notify users via e-mail. Users will have a choice as to whether or not we use their information in this different manner. However, if users have opted out of all communication with the site, or deleted/deactivated their accounts, then they will not be contacted, nor will their personal information be used in this new manner. In addition, if we make any material changes in our privacy practices that do not affect user information already stored in our database, we will post a prominent notice on our Web site notifying users of the change. In some cases where we post a notice we will also e-mail users who have opted to receive communications from us, notifying them of the changes in our privacy practices.
Vesalius adheres to strict principles of patient privacy and confidentiality in all clinical material presented. All images used are with the written consent of the patient and the consent of the contributing surgeon. Facial features and other specific identifiers are not shown or are blacked out when critical areas of anatomy are nearby. No operative photos, videos, or radiological images are presented on Vesalius unless they contribute meaningfully to the goal of worldwide dissemination of state-of-the-art surgical education.
